NIAS aims to designing and/or helping existing aid projects in Africa. One example is assessing the USAID (United States Agency for International Development) activities in Niger. When evaluating the performance of actions designed to combat food insecurity in Niger and the greater Sahel, it is critical to consider the implications of Niger’s rising population and climate change on the future food security situation in the country. As the government of Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou has been mostly ineffectual in answering to this explosive population growth, Niger’s expanding population base is likely to exacerbate efforts to address food insecurity in the country. NIAS members will study the USAID activities in Niger and develop alternative approaches to implement aid projects more effectively.
